“One must always be careful of books," said Tessa, "and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us.”

It's Banned Books Week and I found a fun video to share with you guys. Rae's review on Tuesday talks about a commonly challenged book; what are your thoughts? I'm going to try to complete my own project, although we'll be joined tomorrow by author Katie Bridges in a non-banned book related review. Enjoy, guys. ;)
"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:
Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
"Budding designer Lola Nolan doesn’t believe in fashion . . . she believes in costume. The more expressive the outfit -- more sparkly, more fun, more wild -- the better. But even though Lola’s style is outrageous, she’s a devoted daughter and friend with some big plans for the future. And everything is pretty perfect (right down to her hot rocker boyfriend) until the dreaded Bell twins, Calliope and Cricket, return to the neighborhood.
"When Cricket -- a gifted inventor -- steps out from his twin sister’s shadow and back into Lola’s life, she must finally reconcile a lifetime of feelings for the boy next door."
I have been dying to read "Anna and the French Kiss" with it's incredible amount of beautiful reviews for a couple months now. After discovering it's not at my library, I'm going to buy a personal copy. This sequel looks fantastic too. Let me know your thoughts in the comments! Do you think books should be banned? (A world without the Hunger Games? I can't even imagine... ;P)
Wait? They banned Nickel and Dimed for "Negative depictions of capitalism"? I think my brain just broke a little bit. Banning a book for naughty language strikes me as stupid but mostly frivolous or a red herring. To outright admit to this as a reason for banning a book? Something has gone seriously wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm of the opinion that no books should be banned. Period. Personally I think there are books that require context when you read them and there are definitely age appropriate books but I'm more interested in how a book handles a subject rather than making any particular subject taboo or “too mature” for young adult audiences. But I only get to make the decision of what that means for me and mine. If a parent feels a book is inappropriate that's their decision to make for their own child and no one else's.
*steps off of soapbox*
Thanks for sharing the banned books video. I NEED to get a copy of And Tango Makes Three!
I've heard really great things from friends about Anna and the French Kiss but I haven't picked it up yet. Both Anna and Lola look like incredibly fun reads and are so on my wishlist.
A most excellent WoW!
I love Anna and the French Kiss it was a great story. So sweet. I also can't wait to read Lola. I've been hearing great reviews so far.
