I first discovered The Hunger Games when all my friends were carrying it around but after months I did give in and read it. I understand now why they kept telling me to pick it up.
The Hunger Games takes place in Panem, a capitol surrounded by twelve districts. Each year one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 are sent to the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a fight to the death that the capitol shows on live television. This ensures that the capitol controls you and you can’t do anything about it. Katniss’ father died when she was young and she takes care of her family. The day of the reaping comes and she knows that the odds are against her because her name is more likely to be drawn. She worries for her friend Gale because he is in the same situation. When the drawing begins Katniss’ sister is drawn. Katniss takes her place in the games as a tribute knowing that her sister could never survive in this situation. Katniss is a great hunter and she has a better chance than others, but can she survive the Hunger Games?
I absolutely loved the characters in this novel. Katniss’ character is savage in ways but also beautiful. I also like the calmness in Katniss’ character even thought all the hardship she is facing. Even after the end of the book I didn’t feel acquainted with Katniss or any of the other characters even though there were many qualities I enjoyed about them.
I thought the writing style was simple but amazing. Sadly I could never fully picture anything in the novel. Every time I would try to picture the Hunger Games I would always end up blank. Even with the characters I always felt like I didn’t fully know what they looked like.
Overall I didn’t connect with The Hunger Games, but I am still thanking my friends for recommending this novel to me. I do recommend this novel to young adults. I would even recommend this novel to people who love fiction. I do not recommend this book to people rushing into it, I promise it can wait.
